Srinivas was an orphan who was lucky enough to have had his uncle to look after him, till his last breath. His uncle received a meager salary; in addition to Srinivas, he had three children of his own and a wife to feed. But Srinivas did less to value his blessings and took to bad company, alcoholism, and smoking at the young age of 14. His habits only worsened as he grew. After his uncle’s death, he was left on his own to fend for himself. Neglect and ignorance made him a scamp on the roads and he was left with a severe case of gangrene in his left leg. It had to be amputated!
He was then brought to our hospital to bring hope in his life. A counseling session with RVM left him a changed man. We learnt of his designing skills and encouraged him. Today, he walks with the help of prosthetics and is a fashion designer with a garments factory. Now, Srinivas is free of all his old habits and has turned over a new leaf!
Problems Galore
She was an albino who always stood out in a crowd. Her kith and kin mocked her and branded her a ghost! Saraswathi was also differently abled and therefore she was deserted by her parents and siblings. Left to fend for herself and nowhere to go, Saraswathi sank into depression. Her woes did not stop at that. She woke up, one fine day, to a wound on her face, which grew by the day. Saraswathi had almost never seen the bright light of a day, until she was adopted by the RVM Foundation. She was brought to our hospital for examination. When the reports arrived, the non-healing wound was found to be a severe case of skin cancer. The non-healing, deep red, ulcerous wound stood out on her pale skin.
After 25 sittings of radiation therapy, Saraswathi’s cancer has left her face without a trace. She is today a part of our large 140-member family in our RVM Foundation Transit Home, and is at peace.
Undying spirit
Bubbly, chirpy, and lively Gayathri is 31 years old. She is so full of life that you may mistake her for a nurse than a patient! No one could ever imagine that a patient suffering from such a chronic depression would ever be able to make a comeback from a dismal world to the world of cheer and light.
Gayathri suffered an excruciatingly severe shock over the death of her mother, and threw herself into fits of insidious depression. Soon after that, she lost her brother to a sudden heart attack. This aggravated her trauma and she was affected by Paraplegia with psychosis—a state of mental deterioration, which debilitated her faculties. For almost a year, she was immobile. She was so unstable and unaware of her surroundings that she used to relieve herself wherever she was and hence used to be covered with filth, always! Her neighbors could not help but complain about the foul odor emanating from her house. It was then that we took her under our refuge.
After extensive care and treatment, Gayathri is completely healed. Her bedsores have been cured and she has now regained her capacity to walk.
